It has been an unusual morning. There have been two rain showers and we are not used to that kind of day at all!
We are in the desert mode and it’s hard to get out of it!
The old adage about washing your car or hanging out clothes worked today…I hung out two loads of laundry and sure enough…half an hour later..a nice rain came through and rinsed them again.
The rain also messed up the birds’ food dishes..I used clay pot dishes for some feeders and the safflower seeds got soaked but it was almost empty anyway. I took the old safflower seeds inside and scrubbed up the clay dish and wiped it dry and added new safflower seeds.
I did the same with the jelly dish for the orioles and red finches…nice new jelly after getting it dissolved by the rain.
Now the birds are going bonkers over their new banquet….mama grosbeaks and the baby grosbeaks are especially abundant…papa grosbeak has been here too..actually two papa grosbeaks. I can tell them apart because one had very different black plumage than the other one. The grosbeaks–even the baby ones have beaks that look like small parrot beaks. So do the red finches who also love the safflower seeds. The nuthatches are at the mixed bird seed and the chipping sparrows are eating from the seed I scattered on the deck for them. Even the downy woodpecker is at the finch food hanging feeder. There is a dish with a melted puddle of suet but the Downy seems to prefer the finch mix. Later the Mourning Doves will strut around the deck floor and clean up birdseed for the day.
I discourage the black birds and red winged blackbirds who occasionally think they are welcome at the feeders. They can find their own wild food and leave my Grosbeaks, Orioles and red finches alone!!!
One female grosbeak dropped a feather the other day and it is spectacular. It is dark brown with perfectly aligned cream colored spots marching down the side of the feather in precision marking. It is a thing of beauty.
Once gain I stand in awe of the Creator God who made it all in perfection.
I think of the scripture each day I fill feeders: “consider the birds of the air…they do not sow or reap yet your Heavenly Father feeds them.”
So I am just assisting the Heavenly Father a little bit…even tho. there is not a sparrow that falls without HIS noticing it.
That is comforting right now because we are recovering (slowly) from the death of our precious Princess Kitty..rest in peace, Precious Little Friend. We are thankful for 14 wonderful years we had you. And we loved you and you loved us..every day of those 14 years.
You have many more birds than us. Most of our birds have left..we have a few Gold Finches and our usual Nuthatches, Chickadees and Woodpeckers. I have not seen a Grossbeak at our feeders this year..they eat lots of seeds:)
OUr wrens are long gone…..fewer oriole sightings..I think they are moving out also but the grosbeak families are keeping me broke buying
them safflower seeds! There must ber over 20 babies!!!! The red finches and goldfinches are also still eating and hummers are feeding at the sweet nectar fountain!!!
