CHRISTMAS IN JULY: A BARREL OF FUN
Our family decided to do something entirely new and different this summer.
We celebrated Christmas this past weekend….on a big pontoon on beautiful Big Cormorant Lake!
It is cold and nasty in December…everyone wants to stay in their own homes..including us!!!!
What better time of year to have a family celebration than the hot sunny days of late July? We are convinced that we did the absolutely right thing….”Christmas in July” was so much fun it is hard to put into words.
First off…nobody had to cook a big meal! We ate breakfast together at two homes because it takes two homes to house the whole bunch, as our Herd has increased and doubled in size over the past few years with one grandchild’s marriage and another one’s on the horizon…2 new “grandchildren….John and Danielle added to the original 8.
We made our own lake-lunches to take on the pontoon..easy..no cooking, no big mess. When we got done with our lake day we all went to Dairy Queen and ordered what we wanted for our suppers..no cooking…no big cleanup.
We ate a Dairy Queen cake to celebrate the summer birthdays in June-July and August. Ate off paper plates…no big cleanup there either.
The grandkids had drawn names for silly presents—10 dollars worth of things that started with the first initial of their names….A’s got applejacks and a few other A things….M got M and Ms….A’s got some shoe deodorizers that had an A in them….we had such a good time seeing the creativity of the Grands with their “gifts ” for each other. We will do that again!!! With
another device..like the first initial of their second names of the first initial of the month ih which they were born….it was too much fun not to do again.
Our day at the lake began about 9 a.m. when we loaded up a big pontoon and one big speedboat with our “stuff” for the day. 2 jet skis accompanied the other water craft We landed on a beautiful beach that is undeveloped thanks to two wonderful people who own a farm and have not allowed any of it to be sold for summer cottages or big atrocities(huge houses) to be built on that land..the beach is like it was a century ago or more…quiet and sandy and lovely with shallow, warm water for swimming..no dropoffs, no rocks no weeds..how perfect can it get?
We dallied there all morning and after we got hungry and ate our lunches, the grandkids wanted to launch out into deeper water so they could dive off the pontoon.
That was a wonderful “blast” for a Gramma and Grandpa to float on their “noodles” and watch the “Grands” put on a wild diving exhibition….and a couple of sons too..in their 40s but still kids at heart. I watched my forty-something son hurl himself backwards—- somersaulting off the pontoon many times. We were a mini- Olympic Diving team!!!! I spent so much time in the water on Saturday I got all “pruney” and wrinkled. The water was a perfect temperature..nobody got cold even in the deep water.
Many wild rides on special pull – behind rafts and a “Mable” sit-up sofa- like pull – behind were taken often and for great lengths of time. Water skiing and wake boarding were on the agenda also. Nothing neglected for sure!
A taunt of “Mom, you don’t drive wild enough” was answered with Mom dumping- flipping the taunting son and another grown – up grandson about 3 times til they were exhausted. Thank Goodness for wonderfully effective life jackets!!!!
Way too many snack foods were eaten throughout the day in spite of our relatively healthy lunches! “Gramma” finally had to “put it all” in a big beach towel (upchuck) after rocking in the waves for a couple of hours……nobody noticed me emptying my stomach of gummy bears, dill pickle chis, tiny oreos and tiny chips ahoy and health- food store popcorn curlies. But I really messed up a big beach towel!!!! Thankfully it washes nicely. And I felt a whole lot better afterwards.
We ended our day on the lake about 6 pm and gradually arrived at the local Dairy Queen where we all ordered something to call supper. NO COOKING—NO CLEANUP!!!!
“Christmas in July” TRUMPs December all to pieces!!!!!
Many of us went to sleep before 9 p.m. that night— totally tired out by sun, water and gentle breezes. We slept the sleep not unlike those who are drugged up on tranquilizers and sleeping pills, but our tranquilizers were nature and the day on and in the lake!!!!
We are doing this again next July!!!!!
