Former Governor Mike Huckabee is taking heat for saying plainly what he thinks of unmarried people bringing children into this world when he commented on the very pregnant actress who received an Oscar of something this past week….Natalie Portman about whom I know diddley- squat. I do not get a thrill up my leg about modern movies or movie actors and actresses.(although I am planning to see “The King’s Speech” because I love British history and have read tons about the family Windsor)AT any rate Gov. Huckabee’s sensible opinion about unmarried mothers and fathers having babies..especially those who like Portman and the father of this child…are looked upon by too many people as someone to “look up to” although why in god’s name I do not know! This is nothing new in our culture or among famous people in entertainment venues; there are a lot of children born to unmarried mothers and fathers who happen to be famous but it is also so common in our society in general that it seems like a huge percentage of babies are born “out of wedlock” as the old description points out. I think it is VERY unfortunate for the babies…I have seen too many of these kids wash up on the doorsteps of elementary schools when they are 5 or 6 years of age and they are needy kids who require a lot of things from schools and teachers. Way too many of them are unprepared for the school experience….many of them have little to no respect for adults…..many of them have learning difficulties or behavior difficulties. I am NOT putting down these little waifs nor am I sneering at their mothers or absent fathers. I am stating a fact plain and simple…the children of unmarried parents generally have far more difficulties adjusting in school and in their poor little lives than the children of married and truly committed parents. I have seen a few kids who have been well brought up by two unmarried parents but it is a rarity rather than ordinary. It is very difficult for a single mother or father to raise a child alone. That child desperately needs two stable parents—both a Mom and a Dad. I have seen too many of these kids without married parents suffer the indignities of a mother who has boyfriends in and boyfriends out over a long period of years. Or fathers who have girlfriends in/girlfriends out. These children do not know what to make of their scary situatation. I well remember an 11 year old girl coming to me in the library and telling me about why her books were so long over due. “My Mom’s boyfriend kicked us out and we can’t in back to get our books and other things.” She spoke matter of factly like this was nothing new to her…it had happened many times already to her in her young life…she and 3 siblings who all had different last names and the mother had a different name than all of the kids. I felt like crrying for her; I thought of the other siblings who were younger than she was and what it must mean to them to be “kicked out” of a what was their only home..because the mom was single and had never been married and they depended on “boyfriends” to give them a home. I do not see how anyone can say this sort of situation is good for any children. Never having a dad in the home is often disastrous for both boys and girls. Mike Huckabee is taking heat from social liberals for stating his opinion…..but he is not wrong…..married parents and a stable home is best for children. How can one argue otherwise? I am not speaking of homes broken by divorce or death..that is another difficult situation for children. But those who go their merry way having children ..often multiple children…without getting married have made a conscious decision to make life very hard for their unfortunate little ones. Maybe it is not a conscious decision the first time but it surely is… when there are 3-4 children born out of wedlock. It is a trend that is making our culture more unstable with every single unmarried woman or man who chooses this path in their own lives. Their children have nothing to say about it and it is the children who are most negatively affected by this cultural phenomenon that has so radically changed our society….not for the better.
I am thinking of an enormous green leafy fern…it has to rival some sort of world record…a huge fern that sits on huge strong pedestal at the end of a long corridor in the “Francis” building at St. Mary’s hospital in Rochester. I have seen it many times and never visit anyone at that place unless I go down that long hallway and ponder that huge fern plant.
I first saw it in the winter of 1984. It was huge and healthy then and it has not changed one bit ….I have seen it about a half dozen times since 1984 when I visited people who were in the hospital.
The big fern has its own history. It was brought to the corridor where it sits in 1980 by Mrs. Fiksdal….who owns and operates a flower shop on Second Street SW across from St. Mary’s. Their family also owned the Fiksdal hotel on Second Street for years and years..it is till there and going strong but is under new ownership, I would think due to the Fiksdal’s retirement years.
Mrs. Fiksdal noticed one of the fern plants in the shop was not doing well and looking as it if was about to go to fern heaven.
Instead of throwing it out, she brought it home and began nursing it back to health. There is a wall plaque by the big fern that gives its history and health record. Mrs. Fiksdal fed the feeble plant with Knox gelatin..it does not give specifics but it is an interesting concept that I might use on some of my healthy plants just to see what happens. I will do a bit of research on using Knox gelatin on plants first, though.
The home treatment worked! The plant thrived and grew so well that it outgrew its space at the Fiksdal home and Mrs. Fiksdal brought it to St. Mary’s hospital with the approval of the nuns who operated the hospital at that time.
The huge fern now has fronds that are 5-6 feet long and 6-7 inches in width. The entire plant in its over sized clay pot, seated on the large solid wooden pedestal is the size of a compact car now. I mean we are talking HUGE!!!!
I am fascinated by this fern. It is the traditional Boston Fern and I know about from hearing it before…. that Boston ferns can be extremely long-lived. Many people in the past kept Boston Ferns for years and years and passed them on to future generations. It was considered to be a necessary house plant in the past.
I remember from my childhood, going to Mabel Brown’s house with my mother. That house still is there and I never drive by it without thinking of Mabel Brown and her own huge Boston Fern which sat in a bay window in her living room. It was a small house with small rooms and in my child’s memories, I can see how big that fern was in that small living room.
There is something enduring, something comforting, something that is so appealing in that enormous fern in the hospital hallway in Rochester MN. If I were sick and hospitalized, a ride in a wheelchair to the first floor of the Francis building, a time to meditate by that enormous old fern would give healing and health a new meaning.
I know full well that upon any future visits to St Mary’s in Rochester, I will go to the Francis building again…and contemplate that marvelous old Boston Fern that Mrs. Fiksdal placed there 31 years ago.
It is a silent testimony to something very postive.
Been gone a few days…..long trip to southern MN for a half a week. While traveling it was easy to think about the high cost of gasoline for the car. That led to thinking about why we have such high gas prices now…aside from the turmoil in the oil producing countries of the middle east….right now focused on Libya.
But wait…..that is pretty much the main reason why we are having to pay so much for our gasoline…those of us who do not travel everyday and are on fixed incomes really notice it. I deliberately limit my travels with the price per gallon so out of sight and going higher every day it seems. I travel as little as I can get by with. But others do not follow my example if you can draw conclusions from watching the Pols drive around in big SUV gas guzzlers being transported to the the airport for their overseas junkets or weekend trips to their homes…remember Nancy Pelosi and her flights cross- country every weekend on a government plane???? I have read how much fuel that plane burned every weekend but cannot dredge up the gargantuan figures at the moment. And how many gas guzzlers was it that John Kerry owns and drives? Can’t recall that figure either but my point is…those who trumpet the need for green energy do NOT use it themselves nor do they think THEY have to conserve gas, oil, or fuels they so loudly condemn. I would like to see the whole bunch of Green Liberals peddling on bicycles to set an example for the rest of us Lowly Worms. (anyone remember reading Richard Scarry books to their children???)
I will point few fingers at American sources of our distress starting with the Obama Administration’s Mr.Chu—I think that is his name because I am typing away off the top of my head and not thoroughly researching it right at the moment. But his man said some months ago that he WANTED TO SEE THE PRICE OF AMERICAN GASOLINE go sky high and reach the prices that Europeans are paying!!! The entire Obama administration is hoping the same thing …of that I am certain.
Remember when George W. Bush was the president and gas prices rose during some of the time he was in office? I recall a Labor Day weekend in 2004 when I was stunned by gas costing about 3.01 per gallon. When GWB as the Prez, the Liberals screamed to high heaven about high gas prices…have you heard any Liberal screaming lately about the nearly 4-dollar per gallon gas? I haven’t. The national newspapers like the New York Times and Washington Post and the national cable TV news channels were also running up to 3-4 stories per day when the gas prices rose sharply during the Bush years but I have seen NO such stories from the Major Media outlets now..it is like it is not happening but that is because it is happening in Barack Obama’s presidency.
Oh now I know the answer!—-it is still George W. Bush’s fault…him and his evil Igor named Dick Cheney!!!! They have done this to us and we are paying nearly 4 bucks a gallon because of them again!!!!! It is so simple— silly me!
OK enough fooling around..let’s get down to some tacks made of brass! The Obama administration is devoted to ruining the traditional markets for fuels and power production; DOWN WITH COAL! DOWN WITH OIL! DOWN WITH NATURAL GAS! And don’t even mention building any nuclear power plants..the kind that provide France and other European countries with electrical power. OH NO…we must have GREEN ENERGY!!!! Let us light our homes and businesses and provide power we need with Windmills and Solar Panels and let us make everyone buy electric cars that look like sardine cans and have as much protection around drivers and passengers as a sardine tin. Look how wonderfully well the Chevy Volt is doing at Obama National Motors in Detroit MI!!!! Why, every one wants to pay the price to own and drive a Volt, don’t they??? A Volt costs $41,000 bucks and all of the unemployed will be lining up to drive one so the Obama adminstration can breathe easily about their takeover of General Motors. Well that is not how it is working out at all. How many Volts are selling these days? I looked this one up and exactly 281 were s old in February.
Here are some more painful facts about the Volt: government subsidies (as are in place at GM right now) add lots of costs to manufacturing….dividing those subsidies between the initial production run of 10,000 cars and adding them to the sticker price, the cost of producing one Volt is $81,000.00 per unit!!! The total number of Volts sold out of the 10,000 produced is 928…in other words they are selling like the proverbial hot cakes……NOT!!!
And furthermore—-this nation MUST NOT…under any circumstance drill for any of our own substantial oil reserves along our coasts and in certain states–especially that oil pool in what is called ANWAR in Alaska!!!! And DO NOT build one single new oil refinery in this nation!!!!! Slap moratoriums (moratoria??) on any attempt to drill for our own natural resources…..prevent natural gas exploration and do not allow any natural gas pipelines to be built. Listen only to that munute percentage of Americans who are the ECOFREAKS who have prevented us from using our resources but think nothing of tying us hopelessly to foreign oil which must be bought and shipped from the most volatile dictatorship nations on the face of the earth!!!!!
But say the ECOFREAKS…..we should not even be driving cars….we should not be burning electricity. That is only for the Lefty Liberals who live in big mansions like the White House or in the Gore mansion in Tennessee or work in the US Capitol …those kinds of folks. The rest of us can “do without”.
Well lets start with the green energy sources in the hotbed of greenies…Washington DC, the Left Coast (California) and other liberal bastions like the Metropolis along the east coast from DC to upper New England where all the Libs live in huge warrens like rabbits banding together for protection from the remainder of the American people who do not agree with their ideas . To insist on green energy sources when none of those sources can even provide electricity or heat for one small village just does not make sense to Americans who can see the handwriting on all the walls. Liberals seem to live in bat caves and their only vision seems to be limited to the ivory towers they live in and the Starbucks coffee shops they inhabit.
I did some research on how much green enery would be produced by windmills and solar panels and the results are not encouraging at all. In order to produce 1000 megawatts of green electricity, it would take 20 square miles of precision-engineered solar panels; that is in contrast to the 1 square mile of coal or a nuclear powered plant to produce the same 1000 megawatts of useful electricity.
Using wind power is even more discouraging because both wind power and solar power are considered to be much more “dilute” forms of energy procuction than traditional sources like coal, natural gas, et.al. It would take 125 square miles of land for enough windmillls to produce the same 1000 megawatts of electricity…IF the wind was blowing at all times. On the days when the wind does not blow enough or at all, it would then take 450 square miles of land for the windmills needed to produce 1000 megwatts.
Sensible people immediately conclude that we do not have enough land in the whole nation to produce that kind of green energy. But if the folks who foam at the mouth over the need for green energy follow my idea, they could possibly light up Washington D.C. at least for 4 hours a day.
Instead of levying the highly Liberal recommendation for “taxing the rich” here is my plan for enough green wind power for Washington D.C. for about 4 hours a day. Government workers probably do not work more than 4 hours a day anyway so it will be adequate. Level all the mansions and summer homes of the Rich on Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard, Naragansett, the Hamptons, ..all those islands along the New England coast, plus all other islands where the Rich have their summer homes and immediately began construction of huge energy generating windmills…on the windiest coasts of the entire nation. We could also level things at West Coast retreats on any islands that have big summer mansions of the Left Coast Rich…there is plenty of wind from the Pacific also. We could even eliminate Hawaii as a population area and build the necessary windmills to generate the needed megawattage for Washington DC..even increase the electrical generation for a nomal 8 hour day.
Now as for solar panels needed to generate power…we might have to use up all of southern California and the entire sunbelt states of AZ and NM and turn al that space into solar panels border to former border. Florida for sure….into solar panel land for energy production.
I am on a roll…I have to quit blogging and contact all 100 United States senators starting with my own Amy Koubouchar and Al Franken. I know they will just love my ideas for green energy production.
