TEN-PART HARMONY: FROGS’ CHORUS

After I read on the "Country Scribe" blog that frogs were singing up in the rural Fertile area, I went outside last night and listened carefully.  Sure enough, "our" frogs were in full cry, singing in at least 10 harmonic parts.  I enjoy the Big Daddy’s deep bass voices the most. I suppose the ardent female frogs enjoy those deep basso profundo solos also and flock to mate with the Big Daddys!!!!

I just stepped out on the deck tonight (April 24) and found that the temperature has dropped my many degrees since I last stuck me nose out the door.  It must be that cold front that brought snow to thirsty, dry western ND yesterday.

There are no frogs warbling sweet spring songs tonight!!!!  They must’ve gone back to their muddy beds temporarily.  But they will be out in full chorus when the days and evenings get warmer again and that will happen soon.  Even though we have a minor setback today and tomorrow or even beyond, we know that a 70-80 degree day is not far away.

One of my sons was here this afternoon and was mourning the absence of "true spring", that lovely mild transitional time of April and May that we do not seem to get much of these past years.   We seem to go from raw ugly cold days to summer heat with no transition at all.   I miss the mild spring days that used to be on the calendar each  April and May.  Where have those good kinds of days gone ????    Is it El Nino or is it La Nina or is it climate change?   It could be all three I guess.

Speaking of frogs croaking……Nancy Pelosi has recently quoted what she calls a Bible verse about caring for the environment…..it is not exactly a Biblical quote but it sounds like one.  Now she has been disproved by more than one Bible Scholar….they all say the same thing and I trust their knowledge (not Nancy’s).  All of them say there is NO such Bible passage anywhere in either Old or New Testament.  So Pelosi is pleading that she heard a Priest say something like that some years ago.    Not exaclty an authorized version of the Bible as the scholars see it.    Nancy suffers from many verbal maladies and half – truths so this is just the most recent one.

Better start to really read and study a  real Bible, Nancy, if you are going to start quoting it!!!!

Funnier still that they find it more important to take her to task about whether what she said is biblial writ than to advocate for ecological and environmental stewardship. This could have been seen as a statement of outreach and common cause between the secular and the faith based in the spirit of making our planet more habitable. Instead it was met with derision and chest thumping about how it was not verse and chapter accurate word-of-god citation. And it is claimed that the “left” is not interested in working with faith based initiative. With a spirit of cooperation such as this, one hardly needs to wonder why.

I miss the frogs. Growing up on my parents’ farm outside of Bagley, the nightly serenade often lulled me to sleep as the moon shone through my open window, and the summer wind swirled the curtains, almost like they were directing the amphibian symphony. I still live in a rural area, but there isn’t as much swampland here compared to home. Sweet-almost bittersweet-memories.

Bet those really cold, almost frozen frogs are silent tonight..or will they break into a chorus of “Croaking around the Christmas Tree” or “Hopping in a Winter Wonderland” :)

There are a few wet spots that I drive past in town, and they’re ALIVE with the sound of music! :D

Oh the poor froggies! They must have dug back into the mud about 10 feet by now (Sat April 26)
There will not be much caroling for a few days unless we hit 80 degrees by Monday and then they will be washed hither and yon by a Great Flood of melting snow-water!
I like the titles of the frog’s songs!!!!

  • Fantastic ideas, thanks for taking the time to throw it up
