Today was a hot one but I had to go to Moorhead anyway; even the AC in the car was not doing the job so when I finished my last errand, I decided to stop at one of the places dearest to my heart since I was in college…..the Moorhead Dairy Queen on the corner of 8th Street and Main Avenue. This DQ has been there for years and years; it has not changed in size or service…you still stand outside in a line to get your treat. On a hot day the line is long. Today it snaked up the sidewalk for a long ways and once you got under the red and white awning, it was a bit cooler. It felt like 110 degrees on the concrete and the asphalt of the parking lot. They have put up a huge red and white umbrella on the north side of the small building and there are chairs and picnic tables. Today we were sitting under that blessed shade like a big family on a picnic…strangers all…but related by our sundaes, blizzards, and other cool treats. Men were working in the hot sun putting in a new parking lot so it was not peaceful—plenty of construction noise. I pitied those guys in the hot sun as I sat there with my chocolatey blizzard. How curious that I enjoy that spot so much;it is on a noisy intersection with many fumes from vehicles; trains go roaring by it and it is one fo the most broiling locations on a hot day, but it is nostalgic and it takes me back to the many many times I have patronized that DQ. It is the BEST DQ in town as far as I am concerned. You get your money’s worth at 8th Street and Main Avenue, unlike other DQ establishments that are pretty stingy with the product for the price you pay. I was alarmed by the construction going on and asked one of the workers what was going up. I was so relieved to hear it was the parking lot being re-done. To have the Moorhead DQ change would be a disaster……….where would I go for cool treats and great nostalgia????
